Elementary Parent Paper Jan-Feb 2013
PARACHUTE PLAY
January is Parachute Month for elementary students. It is tons of fun and elicits much laughter! It is also a great way to learn to work as a team. When “playing” with a parachute, everyone has to listen carefully to directions and then pull and push together, cooperating in order to get the parachute to do what they want.
Parachute play also helps to develop muscles as strength is needed to move the parachute as desired. It is often a challenging task!
Your child’s teacher may request that students bring a set of play clothes on their PE day this month. If so, please send your child to school with loose fitting pants and a loose fitting t-shirt that they can change into before PE class. Check your child’s diary for any such notice.
THE DAY WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!
Fun Fair is coming! Spread the word! Mark your calendars! This year’s WCA Fun Fair will be held on Saturday, February 23. It is one day you won’t want to miss! As always it is sure to be full of fun for friends and families!
We will be in contact with you soon about ways that you can help contribute to making Fun Fair a smashing success!
CLASS FIVE’S COASTAL KIDS
During the past couple months, many of our “seniors of the elementary” stayed after school to spend time carefully composing essays for the First Annual Coastal Kids Writing Contest. This engaging competition was part of the Coastal Kids Project that was started by an organization called Displacement Solutions in order to help students gain a better understanding of climate change in their world.
We commend each of the students who worked hard to research and compile these essays. However, we want to give special recognition to those who were chosen as the top three winners for WCA! Shortly before Christmas break, after much anticipation, these winners were announced. They each received a monetary gift card for amazon.com, with values proportionate to their placement. The final results were:
• First place: Adeeb Chowdhury
• Second place: Agatha Talapatra
• Third place: Aanan Abdullah
Big congratulations to each of our winners! Keep up the good work class five!
PLANNING PITHA PARTIES!
MMM! MMM! MMM! Pithas here! Pithas there! Pithas, pithas everywhere! That’s what our elementary students will be saying in just a few weeks. Thursday, February 7 will be our annual Pitha Utshob. Miss Linda Biswas and Mrs. Ludia Halder will be helping our 3rd and 4th graders get ready for this day of delectable delights! Students in the remaining elementary classes will travel up to the sixth floor to enjoy some pithas and admire the beautiful, diverse display. How many kinds of pithas are there anyway?
DID YOU SAY SUPER SIZED SALAD?
Unfortunately because of the many political strikes during the month of December, Class 1 was unable to participate in their annual salad day before Christmas break. No fear, however! It has not been forgotten! It is simply rescheduled for Thursday, January 31. Look out for those walking veggies!
