Coastal Kids Essay Contest

William Carey Academy’s class five students just completed their first semester studying climate change and its impact on costal countries. The exploration began with a gripping presentation on September 4th lead by Mr. Mahiuddin Hafiz from Youth Power in Social Action (YPISA). The students eagerly listened to Mr. Hafiz explain the important issue of climate change and how it is changing the world. After the enlightening presentation, the students participated in a Skype conference with class five and six students from Sorrento Primary School in Australia. The students shared information about each school, country, and themselves. They also shared a few ideas related to climate change. Representatives from YPSA, Coastal Kids Project, and Displacement Solutions made sure the interaction was profitable and successful.
November 1st marked the commencement of the Coastal Kids Essay Contest. The Coastal Kids project and Displacement Solutions created the essay contest to promote further incentive for the students to dive into learning about climate change. The competitors were given approximately a month to research, plan, write, and perfect 500 word essays about, “What Climate Change Means to Me and My Community”. WCA students were thrilled to enter the competition.
The students worked hard to prepare quality essays. Planning and research was conducted at home while all drafting, revising, and proofreading occurred during special after school hours. After several weeks of preparation, the students rushed to the computer lab to type their carefully crafted essays. Typing and refining the essays consumed the afternoons for the competitors. After a month of hard work, the students victoriously completed their essays and submitted them for the judges to review.
Mr. Mahiuddin Hafiz announced the winners for the top three places during WCA’s elementary opening ceremony. Each winner was awarded an amazon.com gift card, as well as a framed certificate and congratulation letters. It was exciting to witness the entire class five group rejoice with the winners. A hearty congratulations to the third place winner, Aanan Abdullah, the second place winner, Agatha Talapatra, and the first place winner, Adeeb Chowdury. A warm thanks also belongs to the talented judges for giving their time and expertice and the leaders from Displacement Solutions and Coastal Kids for creating the competition.
To conclude the semester, the class five students replied to pen-pal letters sent from the students at Sorrento Primary School. The classes are enjoying getting to know one another and they look forward to the next Skype conference where they will discuss what they have learned thus far about climate change. The WCA class five students have already learned a great deal about climate change and are determined to assist in reducing its negative effects on their county and world. The coming semester is sure to bring even further insights into this important topic.
